Harborough Town FC History

Harborough Town FC is a seamless organisation for the pursuit of football from age 5 through to veteran status. The club currently consists of 36 teams including Minis, Girls, Junior, Youth, Ladies, Inclusive, Senior and Veteran levels.

With the recent redevelopment work that is going on, we also hope to play an active part in the community in providing not only football facilities, but social and educational facilities as well.

Harborough Town FC is the realisation of the merger of Harborough Minis FC & Harborough Town FC, which has brought together one club for all ages, gender and ability for the Harborough community. Their individual histories are chartered below:

Harborough Minis FC:
Harborough Minis was founded in the winter of 2000/2001 by a group of four parents who saw a gap in the provision of mini soccer in Market Harborough. They had all played a ‘little’ in their youth and felt they had no choice but to pull back on their old boots and show the youngsters how it was done. All the founder members had children of their own who brought along some friends (approx 15 children in the early days). From this, Saturday morning training sessions started and Harborough Minis FC was born. Within weeks word had spread amongst local children and with numbers at the club growing we secured Robert Smyth School with its large outdoor and indoor sports facilities.

By 2007/08, there was approximately 180 children training weekly and 13 teams entered into the Leicester & District Mutual Football League. We now boast one of the largest Mini Soccer clubs provider in Leicestershire.

Most of our coaches have a 1st4Sport Level 1 Coaching Certificate (this incorporates Child Protection and First Aid modules in its syllabus), with more achieving the Certificate each season. All coaches, assistants and members of the Committee give a great deal of their free time and 100% commitment to help make the Club the success it is today.

All subscriptions and other monies paid to the club are used for the good of the children - to buy new equipment i.e goals, balls, trophies etc, and training facility rental.
The Club also supports the Leicester City FC Goalkeeper Development Centre on Saturday mornings at Robert Smyth School, which offers coaching to aspiring goalkeepers from age 7 upwards.

Harborough Town FC:
Formed as Harborough Town Juniors FC at the start of the 1975/1976 season the club has now been providing quality football in the community for over 30 years and has been based in its own facilities at Northampton Road since the early 1990’s.

The club became an FA Charter Standard Club in 2004 and through consistent development has this year achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status which is the highest accolade currently available and recognises best practice, on-going development and a positive impact within the local community.

Harborough Town FC now consists of Junior, Youth, Girls, Senior and Veteran sections accommodating 20 teams playing regular league football and has a playing membership now approaching 300 with around 90% of those being under the age of 18. The club has also been actively involved in the formation and development of the Harborough Alliance Football Partnership which provides training and game opportunities for children with learning and physical difficulties.

Former players at the club have included Richard Stearman (Leicester City FC + England), Chris Carruthers (Northampton Town FC, Bristol Rovers FC + England) and Martin Johnson (Leicester Tigers FC, England + British Lions). The club has also over recent years seen a number of players, boys and girls, progress into Centre of Excellence and Elite squads at local Professional Clubs and it is rewarding to hear of their individual progress.

We would ask that all players respect but importantly make the most of the opportunities and facilities that are being provided and join us in trying to build a sustainable and inclusive club culture. Everyone can participate in being an ambassador for this football club and we would hope that many can become good role models for their younger colleagues. Be proud to play for Harborough Town FC, enjoy your football, create good friends and seek to progress as far as your ability will allow.
